The day has finally arrived to get rid of Rajesh. It is now or never. I can’t take it any more and I have run out of reasons to be with him. There is no blushing, no fluttering of the heart and definitely no happy smile. The happy smile only appears after many glasses of cheap wine! Sometimes things aren’t always what they seem. And even though Rajesh and I are perfect on paper the reality cannot be further off.

Yes, it is time to do the deed.

I fiddle with my phone, trying to figure out how to break it to Rajesh. I take a deep breath as I dial his number.

He answers, ‘Hi, I’ve been wondering where you disappeared!’

Get straight to the point Neha.

‘So, I have been doing some thinking and I don’t know if this is really working out well.’

Silence.

God, I am such a bitch. How can I be so ruthless?

‘Rajesh, are you there? Will you say something?’ I lose my confidence.

‘Umm, yes I am listening. What is it that you want me to say?’

‘I am not sure if you are really right for me.’

There I said it.

‘What?’ his voice rises.

Uh oh.

‘Rajesh, I don’t think I want to continue this relationship. I think we are in different places. Also, I really don’t think we are right for each other.’

‘Is this because I don’t like your friends?’ he sounds angry.

‘No, it has nothing to do with that. There are many other factors involved.’

‘Really? Look, you can meet your friends for a ladies’ lunch or something like that. I did not say you cannot see them at all. I am just saying that I do not want to hang out with them all the time. And you have my friends to hang out with too. I am sure you will like them.’

He has friends?

‘Rajesh, it has nothing to do with friends or anything. It’s me. I don’t think marriage is right for us, because neither of us will be happy in the long run. Your personality is really different, and you aren’t as outgoing and all that, and I know it will always be a reason for us to fight. And most importantly, I feel you cannot seem to accept me the way I am.’

‘Well, I am what I am,’ he replies adamantly.

Losers use this line for hiding what they can’t be.

I take another deep breath, ‘I am sorry Rajesh.’

Silence.

‘Rajesh?’

‘Yeah, yeah, I’m here. Okay I get it, that’s okay. Umm … well … I guess … that’s it then.’

‘Yeah …’ I trail off, not knowing what else to say.

‘Umm … I really did enjoy being with you Neha. I hope we can continue to be friends.’

‘Yep,’ I say, not offering anything more. There really is nothing else that I can add.

‘Okay, so I guess I shall see you around?’

‘Yeah, you take care. Thanks for understanding.’

Come on, end the conversation now.

‘Sure, no worries, take care of yourself.’ He pauses for a bit before he adds, ‘You know, Neha, maybe you don’t know what you are looking for yet.
